No Better Time than Now to Get Off the Couch…

An Australian study has found that every hour sitting on your couch in front of the television increases your chance of premature death from heart disease by 18%. Have you moved off the couch yet?

Prolonged inactivity which raises blood-sugar and cholesterol levels is to blame for the health affects, not your television set, said David Dunstan, a study author and researcher at Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute in Melbourne. “Too much sitting is bad for health,” said Dunstan, a professor of health sciences. “Avoid sitting for prolonged periods and keep in mind to move more, more often.” Read the complete article here.

How ironic that while we are sitting watching all the ads and health experts on television telling us to get up and moving, we continue to sit? We are not going to repeat the countless lists of the top 10 ways to get your body moving during the day, but we are going to say, get moving! And for those of you who are on your computer the majority of the day, same rule applies. Take short breaks every half hour to get your legs going and blood pumping. Get out of the office for lunch and by all means, walk there if you can. You New Yorkers know what I mean! I mean who drives to lunch anymore right? :)
