Just Breathe
Breathing exercises are a great stress management tool that can help you feel more relaxed very quickly. Since breathing is something we can control and regulate, it is a useful tool for achieving a relaxed and clear state of mind. When the Breath is still, so is the mind. Breathing is life; it’s one of our most vital functions. Breathing exercises help bring more oxygen to the blood and to the brain, and help control your life energy.
Breathing exercises are relaxing and relieve stress. Breathing exercises are so easy that you can do them anytime and anywhere. When you do breathing exercises you will be less stressed and able to handle situations with more ease. It’s been said that when people are stressed, they tend to take short little breaths rather than deep, relaxing ones.
Here are a few quick and simple breathing exercises I find enjoyable on a stressful day:
The Stimulating Breath
- Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed but relaxed. Your breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. This is a noisy breathing exercise.
- Try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. This produces a quick movement of the diaphragm, suggesting a bellows. Breathe normally after each cycle.
- Do not do for more than 15 seconds on your first try. Each time you practice the Stimulating Breath, you can increase your time by five seconds or so, until you reach a full minute.
Deep Breathing
- Sit comfortably with your back straight. Put one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach.
- Breathe in through your nose. The hand on your stomach should rise. The hand on your chest should move very little.
- Exhale through your mouth, pushing out as much air as you can while contracting your abdominal muscles. The hand on your stomach should move in as you exhale, but your other hand should move very little.
- Continue to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Try to inhale enough so that your lower abdomen rises and falls. Count slowly as you exhale.
