Top 5 Ways to Drive Engagement from Your Twitter Followers

Most marketing savvy folks are on Twitter these days, as it’s been widely shown that the popular platform can do wonders for your business or personal venture. But it’s not quite as simple as posting Tweets and walking away – there are a lot of tactics that, when utilized, can drive engagement and earn you a loyal following of fellow Twitterers. Personally, I see a lot of accounts out there with great potential, but they under-utilize these tactics. So, here are a few of those, to help you get the most out of your Twitter account:

1. Talk back. In other words, engage in conversation with fellow users using @ replies. Simply posting updates, and not reading anyone’s else’s content is not good strategy. Reaching out to people is the top way to drive engagement and get people interested in what you have to say. To be effective, you need to stay on top of trends and conversations across the Twittersphere – you do this by actually spending some time reading other people’s content and Tweets, and responding to them.

2. Utilize the search bar. This is key – searching for terms, topics & brands associated with your industry or area of focus is a great way to find new people to follow, as well as learn a whole lot of info about what’s going on in your field. This is the ideal way to choose people to engage in conversation with, based on their Tweet topics. Don’t send them spammy replies, just promoting your URL, but really work to network and develop relationships, as you would in real life.

3. Start a promotion. Find something cool to give away – it doesn’t have to be big or expensive, just cool. :) Then, run a promotion through your Twitter account. Nothing gets people going (and drives Retweets) like a good old fashioned game of chance. For ideas, check out what some other companies and individuals are doing for promotions on Twitter – they’re all over the place!

4. Import your contacts from LinkedIn to Twitter. Here’s a tutorial on how to accomplish this feat. I’m willing to bet you have a whole host of professional contacts who are on Twitter that you weren’t even aware of! Then, create some lists that include these people – that way you can keep track of their posts and promote their accounts, simultaneously. They’re likely to do the same for you.

5. Retweet away! Retweet other people’s content that you like, and they’ll often reciprocate, or thank you, or give you a #FollowFriday shout out. However, I would recommend manually Retweeting … if you use the Retweet button, people don’t see your Retweet in their @stream, it only appears if they look at their RT stats. So, go with the manual Retweet to be sure they’ll take notice. And same goes for you – if people RT your content, give them a shout out as well.

So, if you’re looking for more engagement with your Twitter followers, heed some of these tips, and you’ll be making new friends in no time!
