Red Cross SMS Appeal for Haiti Relief Raises Almost $1M in 1 Day
There’s constant talk about the use of social media to increase profits and generate revenue, but ever wonder how it can be used to assist in charitable causes? Just ask the American Red Cross, who in 24 hours, managed to raise almost 1 million dollars for Haiti relief in 24 hours through a text messaging campaign.
While the actual donations were made through text message, the campaign spread like wildfire through social media, which undoubtedly contributed to its mega-success. If you use Twitter or Facebook, you’ve likely seen the call for donations to help victims of this tragic natural disaster. The campaign asked people to donate $10 via text message – with the charge being applied to your cell phone bill. (If you’re interested in donating, just text the keyword HAITI to the short code 90999, and you’ll get a request for confirmation. Once confirmed, you’ve officially donated.)

“Mobile giving is a fast and convenient way for people to make a donation that can help save the day for people in need and this effort has proven to be especially popular in social media such as Twitter,” said Jana Waterworth-McAndrew, manager of online fundraising and individual giving at the American Red Cross, Washington, as reported by Mobile Commerce Daily.
This is a terrific lesson. Worthy causes could stand to utilize the benefits of social media, spreading their message to a much wider audience than they may have otherwise reached. With a compelling message, people are obviously willing to step up and take action to help. Additionally, it helps that the Red Cross’ message made donating simple, quick and hassle free for the average, busy American. And such a campaign is low cost, high yield – the perfect combination for charities with low budgets. The hearts and minds of the American people are obviously open, even in these tough times. So charitable organizations – take notice! The world is a compassionate place.
