Facebook Brings ‘Like’ Button to 75 Third-Party Sites

Log into your Yelp account yesterday, and you may have noticed some unexpected changes – one of which includes the ability to connect with your Facebook friends. Facebook and Yelp, joining forces? Say what?

And Yelp isn’t the only site seeing this new feature – Facebook has also chosen Pandora.com and MicrosoftDocs.com as their “select partner sites”. Users on these sites will see a notification from Facebook when they log in, giving them the option to connect with Facebook friends. For those looking to keep these sites mutually exclusive, however, you can opt out of changes by clicking “No thanks” on the notification bar.

But that’s not the only big news.

Facebook has also extended its reach to a whole host of sites, giving users the ability to “like” content across the web. This “like syndication”, as they’re calling it, will be available on 75 different sites. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at the F8 conference yesterday.

What does this functionality do, exactly? Well, when users are on third party sites, such as IMDB.com, ESPN.com, NYTimes.com (and 72 others), they will have the ability to “like” or in some cases, “recommend” content. When they do so, their Facebook name and photo will appear next to the item and the activity will appear in their Facebook news feed. These choices will also be visible in your Facebook profile permanently – although you can remove them if you so choose.

Also, if you’re logged into Facebook and visit any of these sites, you’ll be able to see your friends’ activity.

Facebook posted some photos of these new features on their blog late yesterday. Click here to check them out.

These new features will likely raise a lot of privacy concerns, but according to the Facebook blog, “It’s important to note that none of your personal data is shared with a site when you view these new features, and they will only be visible to you when you’re logged in to Facebook. Also, none of these features impact or change Facebook’s advertising programs or policies.”

With all these changes, it may be difficult to stay on top of all your privacy settings, so we recommend doing a sweep of your account privacy settings to make sure you understand all your choices, and have selected the options you want.

The Facebook news is nonstop this week! They’re taking over the web, one social step at a time. Is world domination next? Only time will tell … (Just kidding Facebook – we LOVEĀ  you!) :)
