Twitter’s @ Reply
We’re all familiar with Twitter. It’s been around for awhile now, making headlines with its explosive growth and popularity among celebs. And most of us are aware that it’s a great marketing and communication tool!
But there’s one key feature of Twitter I think a lot of people miss, and that’s the all-important @ reply. While Twitter is great for posting information, it’s also a place to engage in conversation. Too many people use it as a simple tool where they log in, post their 140 characters, and leave. If you’ve got compelling info, great! But even still, most of the time people aren’t going to automatically pay attention to everything you say (unless you’re, say, Ashton Kutcher or Oprah).
One of the greatest ways to utilize Twitter and ensure that more people will pay attention is to reach out to others. In other words, the @reply. While Direct Messages are great too, allowing for private conversations, the @ reply is more public, and other Twitterers will appreciate the reference. After all, anytime you identify a user in an @ reply, all your followers see it, meaning it’s automatically viral. This, in turn, leads to more followers for the person you’re talking to, etc
Not only that, @ replies are great simply because they’re conversations. Who doesn’t want to make new friends?@ replies are the perfect way to do that. Use them to comment on someone’s interesting link, funny comment, useful article, etc. Most people are great about responding to their @ replies, and it will help you build a network of responsive people to reach out to. The more Twitter friends you make that way, the more people you’ll have paying attention to each and every Tweet.
