How People Are Sharing
It used to be that the e-mail list was by far the most effective and important method of communicating with prospective customers, visitors, etc. But these days, there tends to be more buzz about Facebook fans and Twitter followers. So what does this mean when it comes to e-mail?
A new study by Add to Any share service (as reported by Mashable) says that 24% of “share with friends” are happening through Facebook, with only 11.1% through email. While Add to Any is just one service, and certainly not be the final word in the matter, we can generally assume that Facebook is climbing as an easy-to-use share method, while e-mail may be on the downslope.
Facebook couldn’t be handier . . . the massive social network offers up all of your friends in one easy place, so sharing is simple. Hit share, and it becomes automatically viral, popping up in your friend’s streams with no effort on their part.
So what does this mean? Dismantle e-news programs and rely exclusively on Facebook? Not hardly. Facebook and e-mail each have their time and place.
E-newsletters and other promotional blasts are still a crucial way of communicating your message, but nowadays, posting content to a Facebook page is often the best way of ensuring that people share your content with their friends. Consider posting material to your social sites or blog, then sending out emails to your contact list with snippets of content to drive traffic to your social pages as well. This way, you’re still utilizing email, but building your social networks simultaneously.
E-mail is incredibly useful and invaluable as a means of communication, without a doubt, but social networks can’t be beat as methods of engagement and places to share. The bigger your social network, the better. There’s no substitution for having a robust community where people can engage and connect with your brand and each other!
