Twitter Abuzz About NASA “Moon Bombing”

dear nasaIt’s official – the US has bombed the moon. Or that’s what the buzz on Twitter and Facebook would lead you to believe. Cue the Dr. Evil references and cheese jokes. Less dramatically, we crashed a probe into the moon in an attempt to determine whether water is present. But pop culture has its own take on the matter. Namely, that we’re at war with our universal neighbor.

The funny thing about this story is the public’s reaction. @nasa hasn’t yet responded to any Tweets on their official account, but the trending topic “Dear Nasa” is climbing quickly in the ranks. Long gone are the days when governmental organizations could pretend to ignore public opinion … at least until people took to the streets with picket signs.

In today’s digital world, public opinion is obvious within minutes, as social sites are flooded with comments, posts and links.

A quick selection of today’s Tweets to Nasa includes:

XIIISlaughters Dear NASA, I’mma let you finish, but Dr Evil had one of the best plans to blow up the moon of ALL TIME!
MusaXXX @NASA what are the latest developments after Nuking the Moon?
LouManglass As @SharlaManglass points out, @NASA was probably launching a pre-emptive strike against the whalers on the moon. They carry their harpoons.
lisabatty What will Nasa do if they find the moon is made of cheese?
SinacoLad RT @nelsonpw Do you think NASA employees stuffed the inside of their moon-smashing rocket with mean notes addressed to the moon?

While NASA may not have responded just yet, hopefully they’ll work on some clever PR comeback. If only it were April 1, they could create a full-on parody. I can see the headline now . . .  “Probe Crash Uncovers Secret Velveeta Mine Beneath Moon’s Surface.” :)
