Why Foursquare Rocks

If you haven’t discovered the joys of Foursquare, you’re totally missing out!

This location-based app, dubbed “the next Twitter” by Mashable, is tons of fun. Basically, you use Foursquare to “Check In” at different locations, share insider tips, find out where your friends are, and earn distinctions in the form of badges, including “Newbie”, “Adventurer,”and “Mayor,” among others.

When you check in somewhere in your city, it alerts your friends to your whereabouts and offers suggestions about things to do nearby. Also, you can share insider tips with the Foursquare community, and unlock tips others have left behind!

On a Droid or an iPhone, handy apps are available to make all this happen. With Blackberries, you have to navigate to their mobile site – which, frankly, isn’t quite as cool. There’s also an SMS option for those without web-capable phones.

Every check in earns you points, and as you collect points, you’ll be able to unlock badges – that’s where it gets really cool. Mayor is the big kahuna – this is where you want to be. Being the Mayor of a location or business means you’re the most frequent visitor . . . and it often means you get free stuff! Many savvy marketers are using Foursquare for promotional purposes, offering great incentives to Mayors so people will compete for the honor.

The ability to use Foursquare is determined by where you live – it hasn’t been introduced in all cities yet, but it’s continually opening itself up to new markets. If it hasn’t reached your city, click here for a form where you can suggest your hometown.

So, if you live in one of the following metropolitan areas, I highly recommend you give Foursquare a try . . .  it might just become your next addiction! Oh – did I mention you could share your status updates with Twitter, as well? So you can share your whereabouts and favorite spots with all your social connections. Gotta love integrated platforms!
