The Impact of Online Gaming
There are a lot of online gaming fans out there, using every free moment to dive into a round of Texas Hold ‘Em or escape into World of Warcraft. Then there are others, who may have never partaken in the delights of some pleasant play on AddictingGames.com or another, similar site.
A new research study by WorldWinner shows that there may be some solid reasons behind people’s interest in online gaming. 87% of gamers say they get a positive mood boost from playing online games, while 55% say they play games online to forget their worries and problems. Another 44% say they play to keep their mind sharp between job hunting, working or studying, and 62% play online games as a de-stressor while job hunting online. For many people, it seems online games serve a positive purpose, and help them to manage their stress.
When it comes to gaming, there’s something for everyone. War games, lifestyle games, word games, even games for do-gooders, such as FreeRice.com, offering a dictionary-esque game that, racks up grains of rice to feed the hungry in lieu of points.
For marketers, gamers make up a substantial and generally web-savvy audience. According to Wikipedia, World of Warcraft has more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers. That’s quite a group. And online poker alone has served to create celebrities, spawn TV shows and more. And there are many ways to target these niche groups, from selling virtual goods inside Warcraft, to creating special creative content for online avatars, to placing targeted buys on gaming sites. The possibilities are endless. So, if you’re not a gamer, why not give it a go? Get familiar with some popular sites, create a Sim or take a spin around Warcraft. You never know what you might learn . . .
