Report: Hulu to Start Charging in 2010
Looks like everyone’s favorite free TV site, Hulu.com, won’t be free forever. Hulu’s co-parent company, News Corp, has said the site will start charging users for content in 2010, according to Gizmodo.
“It’s time to start getting paid for broadcast content online. I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value,” said Chase Carey of News Corp, about the issue.
That’s not to say all content will be paid. According to BroadcastingCable.com, Carey said that fees will likely apply to “specially created content and TV previews.” So all hope is not lost, just yet.
This news is right in line with News Corp’s announcement that they will start charging for online news content in 2010. Such a move will likely turn many viewers away, leading them to other sources of free content, DVRs and other sites. It’s a fine line to walk with viewers, to keep them coming back when the content costs $. We’ll see if Hulu can maintain their immense popularity after taking the leap. Let’s hope this move isn’t the proverbial “jumping of the shark,” to put it in TV terms.
