Looking Beyond The Glitter
I have been an Internet Marketer for over 9 years now and each year the ways of the marketing world shift drastically. I’m tasked with finding new and improved ways of marketing online to stay ahead of the curve. It seems to me that each year we gain a newfound understanding of how and why we evolve our tactics to build upon an existing internet marketing campaign that will increase our rankings, increase our traffic and gain brand exposure. As the shiny new car in front of us shines, glimmers and hypnotizes us, we to tend to play more with the new and forget about the old. As we play with the new, we tend to spend less time concentrating on what has worked well in the past.
We often say that we don’t believe in Best Practices at Jennifer Barbee, Inc. What works best for some isn’t always the best avenue for others. We get that, we preach that and we practice that. As I explored the new world of social media and all its benefits, I found myself looking even further beyond what we deem is the foundation of Internet Marketing. The core should never change and should always be practiced to support shift and evolved efforts. An internet marketers job is never finished and the industry doesn’t make it any easier.
I find that my job and passion as a marketer is mostly made up of educating myself and staying abreast of news, trends, successes and case studies. We can’t forget about the old dogs in the business who have helped make internet marketers so educated and given us tips, code, processes and have spent many of their resources digging for the information we sometimes look at as the “Gold” in our practices. The shiny new social networks sometimes tend to be so shiny that we forget to look past those and read the valuable blogs and articles that keep us updated on how to get our sites crawled and indexed, how to broaden our keyword research and what tactics we really should concentrate on to keep our content search friendly.
So, where am I going with this? After reading about all these great new features, networks and media outlets this past year, we have to continue to keep ourselves educated and following the, what we feel is simple and time consuming, tactics and algorithm trends that will keep us in the spots that continue to matter most…search engines.
