Google to Test Lighting-Fast Internet Speeds in a Handful of Communities
Google, master of the internet, is initiating the “Google Fiber” project, designed to bring lightning-fast internet speeds to a small number of communities across the US, and it seems everyone wants in. This project has sparked the interest of a whole host of individuals and civic leaders, with many going to great lengths to get Google’s attention.

According to CNN, “The mayor of Sarasota, Florida, swam with sharks. Topeka, Kansas, temporarily changed its name to Google, Kansas. And in Duluth, Minnesota, the head of city government jumped into a frigid lake with ice chunks floating on the surface.” Talk about dedication.
According to Google themselves, “We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We’ll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000, and potentially up to 500,000 people.” No wonder 1,100 communities got in on the application process – those are almost unimaginable speeds. Think of the possibilities …
Who the winners are has yet to be announced, but fingers crossed it’s my home city. Come on Miami! The lucky communities will be announced by the end of the year, and in case you were wondering – applications are closed.
What would speeds this fast mean to internet users and developers? What amazing things could we do with internet speeds 100x faster than what we currently have? It would undoubtedly open up worlds of new innovation in the realms of gaming, advertising & social media. What are your thoughts about what these super-fast connections could change about our current internet experience? Post a comment, we’d love to hear your opinions!
