Dealing With Blogger’s Block

When you keep up a blog, this is the big question on your mind daily.  What the hell do I blog about today?  Start the  coffee, turn off your phone and breathe.  I was thinking of ways to stimulate my brain on a new blog topic, and realized …  I am not alone.  This list is the way I get jump started:

1.    Make a list, check it twice.  Lists are so easily digestible and easy to read and remember (take this one, for example! :) .  Making a top 10 list for your audience is a great way to generate content and give something to the audience.

2.    Read the news and relate it to your audience.  Local or national news can give you great clues into what people are thinking about rightthisminute and connect your brand to what’s happening today.  Just remember to keep it positive, funny and relative.  No need to be negative Nancy, there are news stations for that.

3.    Highlight a partner or conduct an interview.  A great way to add to your content is to include others.  Interview a restaurant owner in your destination, ask a new tech vendor to do a Q&A about a new technology.  Borrow someone’s brain.

4.    Expand on a previous article or post that received a lot of views.  As my grandma used to say: “Fish where the fish are.”  Look at your blog stats and see what’s most popular.  Expand and enjoy.

5.    Post videos or pictures.  Blogs don’t have to always be long articles.  Videos and pictures often stimulate us into action more quickly.  Set the camera, talk for 5 min or less about something new you learned, and voila … you don’t even need spell check.

6.    Get personal.  Lots of times we overlook our own human experiences as fodder for a blog.  But I don’t need to remind you how social the web is – people like to relate to you on a human level. What’s a day in your job like?  Why do you do what you do and what inspires you? It will inspire the reader to take a closer look at your brand.

7.    Conferences and events.  This is a great place to talk about a conference you’ve been to and impart some knowledge to your audience.

8.    Debunk myths.  One of my favorite blog topics is toppling long standing myths about your particular industry.

9.    Secrets!  Ooooh, everyone loves a good secret.  Tell secrets about your destination, your brand and your company and let others get in the know.

10.    Give something away.  Start a small contest to give away a token to your readers.  Involve partners if necessary.  Make it easy and quick, not all sweepstakes need to be long and complicated.

I hope this helps you when you get “Blogger’s Block”.  I know I’ve jump-started my blogging brain … looks like I have a lot of work to do!

Blog Happy,
Jenn
