The Digital Canvas

Everyone is moved by art. Now, granted – not everyone looks at a Van Gogh and feels a kindred kinship with the tortured artist. And, I’m not talking Opera snobs, I’m talking about an art form that moves you. It might be that when you see a dance troupe of kids, you’re moved by their force, the fluid lines, the rhythmic nature that calls to your primitive side and asks you to celebrate life in movement. It might be a baseball game, connected to the players in a art form of muscle, skill and the spirit of America’s game.

For me, it’s the Digital Canvas. To us, the internet is like clay waiting to be molded into a collaborative vision that us net junkies only see in our minds. Let me take you there.

When I meet a client, I am spinning with “what could they be” and am conjuring images of widgets, flash, engagement, interaction and passionate visitors. And, in the travel industry – it’s easy to get passionate about your clients. If you read our post about “Every Spirit Needs to Travel”, you get an idea that Travel+Internet is what we live and breathe.

I am surrounded by amazing artists everyday in the agency. Kristen sees beauty in marketing campaigns and finds a musical rhythm in media. Drew (the O.G. of social marketing since 1997) commands art from building followers and “match-making” visitors and destinations online. Ben is a master conductor conjuring Cold Fusion to his will and bending the net to fit our needs. Hannah, Olivia and Felicity listen to the heartbeat of trending and dance to the sound “what’s next”. Bryon (our newest member) is a real artist, as well as digital animation – which has been an unrecognized “fine art”, but is no less extraordinary and much more complex in skillset. And me, well – I am a child of a fine artist and an actor. Stumbled into the internet in ’93, I tapped into my god-given talent and expanded in a way I didn’t think was possible. And, after all these years I am just as fascinated today by the possibilities and changing nature of the “digital canvas” as I was 15 years ago.

For our clients, the true test is if the art moves you. When we put our skills together, we are creating an entire spectrum of digital art and it works when we motivate the visitor. Yea, yea – I can guarantee clicks and all that jazz. Just like any “painter” can give you a picture. But I ask more of myself, my team and you. I want to move people, I want them to know that this place – this destination — is a siren song to their soul.

So next time you meet a geek, don’t dismiss them as a left-brainer or a person who can’t get human nature. Quite the opposite, we live and thrive in human behavior one visitor, one click, one banner, one tweet and one site at a time.
