Why Unlimited Vacation Will Restore Our Ecomony

I’ve been thinking a lot on how to continue to maintain and further grow a “dream” company for all parties; the clients; the team members and the partners.  The kind of company that makes you jump out of bed every day just for the excitement.  That’s why I did this and why I am a thriving small business owner in the worst economy with no tax breaks.  I want to live life and I want to surround myself with others that do.

But what does it take to run a boutique squad and allow for natural growth (the kind that sticks)?  I believe in servant leadership. I am nothing if not a talent agency.  As I created the company based on my talent; I now offer special services based on the talent of the people who want to work for me.  It’s their party, I’m just the hostess.  It’s the creative leadership that will restore America to the innovative powerhouse we once were.  The revolution of our economy is not happening in fortune 500 companies; but rather that small business owner – exited and weary and steeped in vision like a runaway locomotive.

I once spent 7 years without vacation.  It was a choice.  There was always some conference to go to, a client to visit or pitch to make.  I chose to demolish any preconceived notions about the rate of success.  I was young, arrogant and pressured to achieve for someone else. I have since learned that balance and freedom are not commodities to be used or discarded – but values that build a foundation for true innovation and humanity.

When I read that some companies were changing the vacation policy to unlimited, I recognized immediately that THIS is the era of self-success; the payoff of personal branding and the opportunity for the self-employed. From a “management” perspective, you weed out the lazy and uncommitted.  If Sally is taking off ½ of every week and her performance is lackluster, fired. This type of environment puts the owness back in the lap of those who develop for you.  The era of the manager is dead.  If you are holding tight to the illusion that people need to be managed; you’ll soon be out of business.  If you allow for career growth, personal success and achievement – you’ll attract the kind of thoroughbreds that make heads turn.  In my experience creators never stop creating.  But the kind of talent that is almost star driven is not to be saddled.  There is no rhyme or reason for the process of an innovator.  You just have to let them do what they do.

It makes you responsible for your own success, a great relief to business owners.  Dispense with the time card bullshit and do what you need to do.  Work if you need to work; take time off when you need time off.  Simple, easy to understand and damn near infallible.  We need successful small business owners, leaders with elbow grease and a crazy idea.  Opening up and shedding the tired dogma of a patriarchal society will provide the breeding ground for our greatness.

The solution to getting our capitalism back is freedom.
